Screen Time
SCREEN TIME
Screen time is becoming more prevalent each day as screens and technology become more popular and enticing to children with video games, virtual days, virtual reality, etc. The reality is that various research studies have concluded that screen time is extremely addictive. Screen time has also been shown to change children’s brain neurochemistry, resulting in “normal life” becoming “boring.” At 40:31 Rehab and Wellness, we acknowledge that screen time can be beneficial entertainment, but like anything else, it is best for it to be monitored and limited. Screen time is a wonderful reward for positive behaviors (completing homework, chores, etc.). As an occupational therapist, I encourage you to take the 1000 Hours Outside challenge to replace screen time with outdoor time. Outdoor time provides a much richer environment for your child’s development; to thrive, move their body in new ways, experience various sensory environments, and improve circadian rhythms. There are various articles that discuss the effects of screen time posted below, as well as a graphic that discusses screen time limit recommendations.
